Most candles end up in a cupboard, waiting for an occasion that never quite arrives. Ours are made to be used. A dinner on a Tuesday, a shelf in February, a book at the end of a long day, and the night the power goes out.

It is the same candle every time. Pure Canadian beeswax and a cotton wick, nothing added.

Candles worth using, not saving

Beeswax has a naturally high melting point, higher than soy or paraffin. It holds its shape in a warm room and burns slowly instead of racing down, which is where the long hours come from. That is also why a beeswax candle is worth lighting on an ordinary evening: you are not burning through something precious, you are getting hours out of it.

Everyday dinners

A taper pair turns a weeknight meal into something slightly better, with no effort and no fragrance competing with the food. Our hand dipped 10-inch tapers give roughly 10 hours per candle, so a pair covers a good run of dinners.

Gatherings and celebrations

Grouped pillars anchor a table for a whole evening. A Flat Top Three Inch Pillar runs approximately 35 to 45 hours, and the Flat Top Trio Pillar Candle Set gives you three of them, enough to carry a stretch of holiday meals rather than a single night.

Home decor, lit or unlit

Beeswax looks like what it is. Warm gold, matte, natural. Grouped on a mantel or a windowsill, these read as objects before they are ever lit. The Hex Pillar Trio Candle Set is the one people put out and leave out: three graduated pillars with a raised honeycomb pattern pressed into the wax, approximately 35 to 45, 40+ and 50+ hours respectively, so the group carries a room for weeks rather than an evening.

Quiet everyday rituals

A single votive beside a bath, a book, a morning coffee, or the end of a workday. Approximately 10 to 12 hours from something small, and no added fragrance, so there is nothing to compete with the quiet.

Our seasonal and decorated designs rotate through the year. We rebuild our collections around the core candle shapes, so favourites come back, sometimes in new form. Setting a table for a gathering is its own thing, and we have written that up separately.

When the power goes out

Practical, and worth keeping on hand. Beeswax burns long and steady, needs nothing but a match, and stores for years without going off. A box of tea lights spreads light through several rooms at roughly 4 to 5 hours each. A large pillar gives you the most hours in the room you are actually sitting in: the Flat Top Seven Inch runs approximately 55+ hours, and the fern pillars approximately 50+.

The usual sense applies. A stable, heat-safe holder on a flat surface, flames clear of anything loose, never left unattended or within reach of children and pets, and put out before you sleep.

What to keep on hand

Getting the most from every candle

  • Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before every burn.
  • Burn for two to three hours at a time so the wax pools evenly to the edge and nothing is left stranded on the sides.
  • Keep candles out of drafts, away from fans and open windows.
  • Store them cool and out of direct sun.
